Shri Lakshman Prasad Acharya is the Hon'ble Governor of Assam and, by virtue of his office, serves as the Hon'ble Chancellor of the Assam Veterinary and Fishery University (AVFU). He assumed office as the 32nd Governor of Assam on 30 July 2024, succeeding Shri Gulab Chand Kataria.
Born on 3rd October 1954in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, Shri Acharya began his professional career as a teacher in 1974. With a deep commitment to education and rural development, he launched the "Shishu Shiksha Gaon Ki Ore" campaign in 1977 to promote quality education in rural areas and played a significant role in establishing several educational institutions.
Prior to assuming the office of Governor, Shri Acharya served as a Member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council from 2015 to 2023. During this period, he also served as the Deputy Leader of the House in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council and as the Vice-President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Uttar Pradesh. Earlier, he served as the 17th Governor of Sikkim from February 2023 to July 2024 before being appointed as the Governor of Assam.
As the Hon'ble Chancellor of AVFU, Shri Lakshman Prasad Acharya is the constitutional head of the University. The Chancellor presides over the University's Convocation, appoints the Vice-Chancellor in accordance with the provisions of the Assam Veterinary and Fishery University Act, 2024, confirms the conferment of honorary degrees, and exercises the powers and responsibilities vested in the office under the Act, Statutes, Ordinances and Regulations of the University.
Through this office, the Hon'ble Chancellor provides overall guidance and oversight to uphold academic excellence, institutional autonomy, transparency, and good governance while supporting the University's mission of advancing education, research, innovation and extension in the fields of veterinary, animal, dairy and fishery sciences.
