The Directorate of Research (Veterinary) was originally established on 2nd April 1989 to coordinate and strengthen research activities related to veterinary, livestock, fishery and allied sciences. Prior to its establishment as a full-fledged Directorate, the office functioned under the designation of Associate Director of Research from 27th March 1973 to 2nd April 1989 under Assam Agricultural University.

Following the establishment of Assam Veterinary and Fishery University (AVFU) under the provisions of the Assam Veterinary and Fishery University Act, 2024 (Assam Act No. XXI of 2024), the Directorate now functions under AVFU as the principal body responsible for planning, coordination and supervision of veterinary, livestock and fishery research activities of the University.

At present, the Directorate is headed by one Director of Research (Veterinary) and supported by one Deputy Director of Research. The Directorate plays a pivotal role in promoting basic, applied and field-oriented research related to animal health, livestock production, fisheries development, biotechnology, clinical sciences, public health and allied disciplines for the benefit of the farming community and society at large.

Activities & Duties of the Director

  1. Planning, coordination and supervision of research activities related to veterinary, livestock, fishery and allied sciences under the University.
  2. Formulation and implementation of research policies, programmes and priorities for scientific advancement and sustainable development of animal and fishery sectors.
  3. Coordination of basic, applied and field-oriented research projects undertaken by different departments, research stations and constituent colleges of the University.
  4. Promotion and monitoring of interdisciplinary and collaborative research activities with national and international organizations, institutes and agencies.
  5. Facilitation of externally funded research projects sponsored by agencies such as Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Department of Science and Technology (DST), ASTEC and other funding organizations.
  6. Supervision and monitoring of research progress, utilization of research grants and maintenance of research records and documentation.
  7. Coordination of research review meetings, scientific seminars, workshops, symposia and training programmes related to veterinary and fishery sciences.
  8. Promotion of technology development, validation and dissemination for the benefit of farmers, entrepreneurs and other stakeholders.
  9. Coordination and supervision of research activities of Livestock Research Station, Goat Research Station and other research units under the University.
  10. Facilitation of publication of research findings, scientific reports, technical bulletins and other research-related documents of the University.
  11. Encouragement and support for patent filing, technology commercialization and innovation-based research activities.
  12. Coordination of student research activities in collaboration with the concerned Deans and Departments wherever required.
  13. Monitoring compliance with ethical guidelines, biosafety regulations and statutory requirements related to research activities.
  14. Maintenance of liaison and official communication with Government departments, research councils, funding agencies and collaborating institutions.
  15. Execution of all other duties and responsibilities assigned by the Vice-Chancellor from time to time for strengthening research and innovation activities of the University.
