The Assam Veterinary and Fishery University Bill, 2024, was passed by the Assam Assembly on the fourth day of its Autumn Session. It was introduced by Hon'ble Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister Sri Atul Bora, to establish a new university specializing in veterinary and fishery sciences.
Later, the university was formed in February, 2024 by merging existing veterinary colleges and the College of Fishery Science in Assam that was earlier under the Assam Agriculture University, Jorhat. This initiative was part of the Government of Assam's efforts to create a specialized institution that would cater to the growing demand for skilled professionals in veterinary and fishery sciences

XXI OF 2024 (Received the assent of the Hon'ble Governor on 25th September, 2024), THE ASSAM VETERINARY AND FISHERY UNIVERSITY ACT, 2024, No. LGL.43/2024/8., an act of the Assam Legislative Assembly was assented by the Governor of Assam on 25th September, 2024 and has been published for general information in THE ASSAM GAZETTE- EXTRAORDINARY, Registered No.-768/97 by the GOVERNMENT OF ASSAM, ORDERS BY THE GOVERNOR LEGISLATIVE DEPARTMENT : : : LEGISLATIVE BRANCH NOTIFICATION, The 27th September, 2024 vide No. 441 Dispur, Friday, 27th September, 2024, 5th Asvina 1946 (S. E.) with the Headquarter of the University at Khanapara, Guwahati, Assam.
The AVFU has been created with the constituent colleges viz., College of Veterinary Science, Khanapara campus, Lakhimpur College of Veterinary Science, North Lakhimpur campus and College of Fisheries, Raha campus, and the Krishi Vigyan Kendras located in the districts of Kamrup, Morigaon, North Lakhimpur, Baksa and Barpeta as well as the Livestock Research Station at Mandira and Goat Research Station, Byrnihat.
Sri Lakshman Prasad Acharya, Hon'ble Governor of Assam on 13 October 2025, Monday administered the oath of office to Dr. Niranjan Kalita as the vice-chancellor of Assam Veterinary and Fishery University at a ceremony held at the Raj Bhavan, Guwahati. The ceremony was attended among others by Minister of Fisheries Krishnendu Paul, Chief Secretary Ravi Kota, Vice-chancellor of Assam Agriculture University Prof Bidyut Ch. Deka, Commissioner and Secretary, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary MS Manivannan, and senior officers of the state government. Dr. Birendra Kumar Sarma has been appointed as the first Registrar of the Assam Veterinary and Fishery University.
The AVFU has been established exclusively for the development of veterinary, animal, fishery and allied sciences and for furtherance of learning and prosecution of research and transfer of technology in veterinary, animal, fishery and allied sciences and matters connected therewith and incidental thereto with the following objectives:
