COLLEGE OF FISHERY SCIENCE, RAHA

About the College

The College of Fisheries, Raha is the first institution of its kind in the North Eastern Region of India, established to promote quality education, research and extension in fisheries and aquatic sciences. The foundation for establishing the College was laid in 1982 during the Region-II Committee meeting of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) held at Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat. Recognizing the immense fisheries potential of the North Eastern Region and the need for trained human resources, ICAR recommended that Assam Agricultural University prepare a proposal for establishing a dedicated fisheries college. The proposal received approval in 1985 with financial assistance shared between ICAR and the Government of Assam. Although the ICAR Accreditation Committee initially suggested commencing academic activities at the Faculty of Veterinary Science, Khanapara, the Government of Assam decided to establish the College at Raha in Nagaon district. The academic programme commenced during the 1987–88 session with the introduction of the four-year Bachelor of Fisheries Science (B.F.Sc.) degree programme, making it the first fisheries college in the North Eastern Region of India. For more than three decades, the College functioned as a constituent college of Assam Agricultural University and made significant contributions to fisheries education, research and extension. It developed modern teaching facilities, laboratories, instructional fish farms and extension programmes while producing skilled fisheries professionals who have contributed to the development of the fisheries sector in Assam and across the country.

A major milestone in the history of the College was achieved with the establishment of Assam Veterinary and Fishery University under the provisions of the Assam Veterinary and Fishery University Act, 2024 (Assam Act No. XXI of 2024). The Act received the assent of the Hon'ble Governor of Assam on 25th September 2024 and was published in the Assam Gazette (Extraordinary) on 27th September 2024. Following the formation of AVFU in February 2024, the College of Fisheries, Raha became one of the constituent colleges of the newly established University, alongside the College of Veterinary Science, Khanapara and the Lakhimpur College of Veterinary Science, North Lakhimpur.

Today, as the Faculty of Fishery Science under Assam Veterinary and Fishery University, the College continues its commitment to excellence in fisheries education, research, innovation and extension. Equipped with modern laboratories, instructional farms and dedicated faculty, the College remains a premier institution for developing skilled fisheries professionals and advancing sustainable fisheries and aquaculture in Assam, the North Eastern Region and the nation.
