Establishment of Advanced Diagnostic Facilities

A well-equipped Molecular Disease Diagnostic Laboratory has been established under the National Surveillance Programme for Aquatic Animal Diseases (NSPAAD) with support from ICAR/PMMSY to detect and monitor aquatic animal pathogens using modern molecular tools.

An Aquatic Animal Health Laboratory (AAHL) was established with financial support of approximately ₹1.15–1.17 crore from the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) to provide aquatic animal disease diagnostic services for fish farmers in Assam and the North Eastern Region.

Disease Surveillance and Identification

Around 25 fish diseases have been identified from aquaculture systems in Assam through the National Surveillance Programme for Aquatic Animal Diseases (NSPAAD).

Surveillance has been conducted for aquatic animal diseases of national and regional importance, and research outputs have been generated on pathogens affecting freshwater fishes in Northeast India.

Publications and Knowledge Generation

Faculty members have published several research papers, book chapters and technical publications on aquatic animal health, disease diagnostics, therapeutics and fish health management.

Farmer Awareness and Training

More than 20 awareness programmes have been conducted across different districts of Assam on aquatic animal health and disease management.

Training programmes have been organized for government officials, KVK personnel and fish farmers on disease prevention, early diagnosis and aquatic animal health management.

Technical manuals and educational leaflets on aquatic animal health have been prepared and distributed under surveillance projects.

Competitive Funding and Project Support

The department has secured external funding exceeding ₹4.4 crore from agencies including NBFGR, NFDB and ICAR for research, infrastructure development and aquatic animal disease surveillance.

The department actively participates in national aquatic animal disease surveillance programmes, providing diagnostic support and early warning services to fish farmers.
