Salient Achievements

  • Successfully domesticated and established Live Gene Banks for indigenous fishes including Wallago attu, Channa aurantimaculata and Rita rita. Farm stocks have been developed for biological studies.

  • Successfully domesticated 15 species of Small Indigenous Fishes (SIFs) of riverine origin.

  • Developed species-specific feeds for Wallago attu, Channa aurantimaculata and Rita rita.

  • Published the first draft of the Directory of Indigenous Fin Fishes of Assam.

  • Under the DBT-funded project "Sustainable Livelihood Promotion through Integrated Farming System (IFS)", technologies on Pig-cum-Fish Culture and Poultry-cum-Fish Culture were transferred to 50 farming families in Nagaon and Morigaon districts.

  • Published the book "Conservation of Aquatic Biodiversity" (ISBN: 978-93-84679-89-7) during the Launching Workshop on the Scientific Conservation Programme for Indigenous Fish in February 2020.

  • Developed low-cost bamboo cages for wetland fisheries under an NFDB-funded community-based cage culture project.

  • Conducted metagenomic studies on freshwater ecosystems of the River Manas and selected wetlands of Assam.

  • Documented 12 Orders, 29 Families and 190 fish species from the Brahmaputra and Barak valleys. DNA barcodes have been generated for 120 species, and Volume I of the Directory of Indigenous Fishes has been published.

  • Reported the first record of Garra substrictorostris from the River Manas, Assam.

  • Reported the first record of Osteobrama vigrosis from the Brahmaputra River drainage, Assam.

  • Described a new fish species, Neonoemacheilus lachitensis (Cypriniformes: Nemacheilidae), using an integrative taxonomic approach.

  • Conducted research on the molecular systematics, species delimitation and population genetic structure of Danionidae in the Brahmaputra Basin.

  • Carried out DNA-based taxonomic resolution and phylogenomic studies of Garra assemblages from the Brahmaputra River network.

  • Established Live Gene Banks for indigenous fishes including Hemibagrus menoda, Wallago attu, Channa aurantimaculata, Mystus cavasius, Mystus vittatus, Channa striata and Channa marulius.

  • Developed induced breeding protocols for indigenous fishes namely Mystus cavasius, Mystus vittatus and Macrognathus aral.

  • Conducted environmental DNA (eDNA)-based freshwater biodiversity studies in the River Manas and selected wetlands of Assam.

  • Published the first report on the occurrence, distribution and trophic transfer of microplastics across environmental and biological matrices in the Brahmaputra River Basin.

  • Undertook pioneering eco-modelling-based characterization of wetland ecosystem health and functioning in Assam.
