Salient Achievements
1. Establishment of Advanced Diagnostic Facilities
- A well-equipped Molecular Disease Diagnostic Laboratory has been established under the National Surveillance Programme for Aquatic Animal Diseases (NSPAAD) with support from ICAR/PMMSY to detect and monitor aquatic animal pathogens using modern molecular tools.
- An Aquatic Animal Health Laboratory (AAHL) was set up with financial support (~Rs1.15-1.17 crore) from the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB), intended to provide disease diagnostic services to fish farmers in Assam and the Northeast region.
2. Disease Surveillance and Identification
- Under the NSPAAD project, the department has identified around 25 fish diseases from culture systems in Assam and conducted surveillance for aquatic diseases of national and regional concern.
- Research publications and technical outputs have been produced on fish pathogens affecting freshwater species in the Northeast.
3. Publications and Knowledge Generation
- Faculty members have published multiple research articles and scientific chapters on fish health, disease diagnostics, treatment, and aquatic animal management in peer-reviewed and edited volumes.
4. Farmer Awareness and Training
- The department has conducted awareness programs (over 20) across districts in Assam on fish health and aquatic disease management.
- It has organized training programmes for government officials, KVK staff, and fish farmers focusing on disease prevention, early detection, and health management practices.
- Production of manuals and educational leaflets on aquatic animal health for the farming community under surveillance projects.
5. Competitive Funding & Project Support
- The department has attracted significant external funding (~Rs4.4 crore plus), especially from agencies like NBFGR, NFDB, and ICAR, for research and infrastructure development (including the AAHL project).
- It participates and leverages national disease surveillance networks, linking farmers with early warning and diagnostic support systems.
