Salient achievements

A. Establishment & Growth :

  • Established as an independent department on 8 January 1975 (originating from Microbiology under Pathology & Bacteriology since 1948).
  • Developed into a leading center for veterinary microbiology in India, addressing transboundary and emerging diseases in the North Eastern Region.
  • Currently led by the 11th HoD, Dr. N. N. Barman; faculty strength: 8 members.
  • Secured Rs35+ crores in external research funding.

B. Infrastructure & Facilities :

  • Advanced laboratories in Bacteriology, Virology, Immunology, Mycology and Molecular Biology.
  • DBT-ADMaC Centre for advanced disease diagnosis and molecular epidemiology.
  • Functional BSL-3 laboratory for high-risk pathogens (ASF, Avian Influenza, Anthrax, etc.).
  • Revenue-generating diagnostic units: AADDF and PDRC (PPP mode).
  • Animal Experimentation Unit with ethical compliance.

C. Academic Excellence :

  • Produced 124 MVSc and 26 PhD graduates.
  • Alumni serving in ICAR institutes, state veterinary departments, central agencies and international organizations.
  • Hands-on training in advanced diagnostics (PCR, ELISA, RT-PCR, qPCR).
  • Faculty and alumni holding prestigious positions in the Indian Council of Agricultural Research and national research centres.

D. Research & Publications :

  • 1,889+ research papers, including 125 high-impact publications.
  • 100+ technical bulletins/books, 42 training manuals, 20+ SOPs and 179 popular articles.
  • 31 completed and 15 ongoing externally funded research projects.

E. Vaccine & Diagnostic Innovations :

  • Thermostable Newcastle Disease Vaccine (technology transferred). Duck Plague and CSF cell culture-adapted vaccines.
  • Goat Pox/LSD and ASF vaccine candidates (under development).
  • Indigenous ELISA and multiplex qPCR assays for ASF, CSF, PPR, JEV and pig pathogens.
  • First indigenous ASFV antigen LFA kit in India.

F. AMR & Technology Development :

  • Research on antimicrobial resistance and alternative therapeutics (herbal gels, probiotics).
  • Patents filed/obtained including Piggy Flask (boar semen transport device) and DIVA ELISA for Brucellosis.
  • Industry-transferred diagnostic technologies and vaccine platforms.

G. Revenue & Outreach Impact :

  • Rs50+ crores generated through research projects.
  • Rs69+ lakhs from diagnostic services; additional revenue from training and consultancy.
  • Training of 500+ professionals annually.
  • Active disease surveillance and outbreak investigations (Anthrax, Black Quarter, Avian Influenza).
  • Strong One Health-oriented zoonotic disease monitoring in collaboration with premier institutes such as ICAR-Indian Veterinary Research Institute.

H. Overall Impact :

  • A nationally recognized center of excellence contributing significantly to "vaccine development, advanced diagnostics, antimicrobial resistance mitigation, zoonotic surveillance, veterinary education, and farmer-oriented extension services," strengthening animal and public health in North Eastern India and beyond.
