Salient Achievements

Teaching

The Department is imparting teaching of Pharmacology and Toxicology courses to the students of B.V.Sc. & A.H. degree programmes as per VCI (MSVE 2016) syllabus. At present seven batches of undergraduate students have completed their courses.

The theory and practical courses conducted in undergraduate teaching include:

  • General Pharmacology
  • Drugs Acting on Autonomic Nervous System
  • Drugs Acting on Central Nervous System
  • Drugs Acting on Different Body Systems
  • Veterinary Chemotherapy
  • Veterinary Toxicology

Our teaching staff are also engaged in various postgraduate research works on different aspects of pharmacology of drugs, chemicals and indigenous medicinal plants.

Currently two postgraduate research studies are in progress:

  • Anthelmintic activity of Linalool, the phyto-constituent of Zanthoxylum armatum seed against Haemonchus contortus in goats.
  • Anthelmintic efficacy of active compound "Linalool" of Zanthoxylum armatum seed against Fasciola in goats.

Postgraduate research completed under the guidance of our faculty includes:

  • Evaluation of Hepatoprotective Activity of Polygonum microcephalum in Carbon-Tetrachloride Induced Hepatotoxicity in Rats.
  • Evaluation of Anti-Arthritic Activity of Houttuynia cordata Thunb Leaf Extract in Rats.
  • Benzimidazole resistance study in clinical caprine haemonchosis with reference to involvement of beta-tubulin gene.

Research Projects

At present the department is implementing three research projects sponsored by Assam Science, Technology and Environment Council (ASTEC), Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY) and Numida Biotec Pvt. Ltd. on pharmacological studies. Two research projects sponsored by RKVY and Missing Autonomous Council (MAC) have already been successfully completed.

Extension Activities

The staff members of the department regularly undertake extension activities in rural areas in collaboration with the State Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department, District Administration, Missing Autonomous Council (MAC), NGOs and other agencies.
